Guests generally find the experience worth the cost – one guest described their stay as “an absolute dream… Unparalleled luxury that was far better than any 5 star hotel”, showing that the quality of the rooms and service are worth the value.

The hotel only does breakfast (there isn’t a full service restaurant for lunch/dinner on site); however, the staff are more than happy to recommend restaurants that are local and can even help make a booking
A guest noted, ”The hotel only provides breakfast but there are many great choices in the nearby villages, and the wine is good” – indeed, being an active winery, the on-site wine cellar and tasting room are a core amenity. You can taste the Cattunar family’s wines at the bar or in a guided wine tasting. Many travelers cite the wine tasting experience as a highlight, hosted by knowledgeable staff. “We learnt a lot about the wine and Vanessa explained the different grapes, soils and wines to us very friendlily” is one review which shows the level of personalisation of the wine experiences they offer. The affilated winery is a dream come true for wine enthusiasts; it allows visitors to explore the cellar and the vineyard and even buy the estate’s wines and olive oil.
Spa & Wellness: The residence has a large wellness area which is available for the use of guests 24 hours a day. Outdoor Pool: Out in the garden there is a large, outdoor, seasonal pool which is encircled by centuries old olive trees and vine rows
The pool area is to be quiet – “a perfect place to spend some romantic time with your loved one and have a good glass of wine while you swim up to the stars,” the hotel encourages

Location
Wine Residence Cattunar is situated in the village of Nova Vas (Nova Vasi) right outside Brtonigla in the north-western part of the Istria region of Croatia. The property is set on the estate of the Cattunar family with their own vineyards and olive groves, and on a gentle hilltop with a view to the Adriatic Sea (on a clear day you can see to the Italian coast)
The site is located in a tranquil countryside and therefore quiet and relaxing, but located not far from the main attractions of Istria.
Accessibility: The residence is about 20 minutes’ drive from the main Istrian highway (the “Y” expressway), which can be accessed easily by car
Free on-site parking is available. The nearest airports are Pula (Croatia) which is about 35 minutes south and Trieste or Ljubljana (in neighbouring Italy/Slovenia) which are about 1 hour away. This gives multiple options for air travel visitors. Even though the site is located in a rural area, the nearest towns are easily accessible.
Proximity to Attractions: ”Wine Residence Cattunar is a serene retreat in the heart of the most busy part of Istria, a few minutes from the sea,” as the official description states. Indeed, the Adriatic Sea is approximately 5-6 km from the site – it takes about 10 minutes to drive to the coastal town of Novigrad and its beaches. The property is 2.3 miles from Aquapark Istralandia, a popular waterpark for families (3.7 km). The tourist centres of Umag, Novigrad and Poreč with their beaches, restaurants and historic sites are 10-20 minutes by car distance. Besides that, the beautiful coastal and inland towns are quite near; Buje, Grožnjan (approximately 5 km/10 km), Oprtalj and Motovun are all about a short car ride. A guest commented that there are ”plenty of beautiful towns 20mins drive in any direction” and Cattunar is perfect for this as a base to explore the region.
Activities
Wine guests at Residence Cattunar can take part in various wine-related activities on the premises, as well as wellness and leisure activities. There is also access to cultural and outdoor activities in the surrounding area:
Wine Tasting & Winery Tours: The primary activity of the Cattunar Winery is exploring the wine residence. Most of the time, guests are given tours of the wine cellar and the vineyards, and are told about the history of the estate (the Cattunar family has 40 hectares of vines and produces famous Istrian wines). The wine tastings are done either in the fancy tasting room or on the spacious terrace that overlooks the sea. Guests have always complimented these experiences – the wines (from Malvazija to Teran varieties) are great and the service (including the sommelier) is quite informative about the “different grapes, soils and wines” of the area
Tastings can be scheduled in the late afternoon or early evening; some packages include free tasting. For the wine aficionado this is a perfect place to stay as you can taste the wines which are produced right on the premises. (Tip: It’s well worth tasting the “Four Soils” wines – Cattunar’s vineyard covers four different soil types which are a special feature that they present in particular tastings.)
Wellness & Relaxation: Some guests spend most of their time on the premises and do not see the need to go elsewhere to relax. You can spend a day pampering yourself in the wellness center – move between the sauna, jacuzzi, and relaxation area, or get a massage for the ultimate treat. The outdoor infinity pool area is great for lying by the pool and reading or taking a swim and enjoying the view. The pool is accessible at all times during the summer for swimming, and a night time swim is a popular activity for couples. The hotel is very quiet, so it is ideal for yoga or meditation; you can look for an open space in the gardens or a shady spot by the olive trees to practice. At night, there is nothing better than soaking in the hot tub or relaxing on your private terrace (with a Cattunar wine) while watching the stars.
Outdoor Activities: Complimentary bicycles are provided to guests to enable them to explore the area at their own pace. There are crushed-gravel paths leading to the vineyards and olive farms from the property – perfect for cycling or walking. You can reach nearby villages, local restaurants that serve food from the farms, or places with beautiful views to the Adriatic within a short ride. If you are a hiking enthusiast then you can also drive for a short distance to reach the trailheads in the Mirna River valley or the coastal trails. This luxury 5 Star Hotel can also request for picnic baskets or suggest itineraries. Also, for the active child, Aquapark Istralandia is just 5 minutes away and provides a perfect place to spend time playing in the water slides and pools for those who are tired of sitting by the pool.
The beach is also easily accessible; the staff can recommend the best places to swim on the coast, from the rocky shores of Novigrad to the small coves in other areas, and even arrange for transport. Other water activities like kayaking, sailing or stand up paddle boarding can be arranged in nearby towns.
Cultural Tours: The hotel can help set up tours to other historic towns like Grožnjan which is famous for its art galleries and music or Motovun which is famous for its film festival and truffles. Many guests spend two to three hours in these hilltop towns walking along the narrow cobblestone streets and enjoying the view. Food and wine tours are another highlight – the area is famous for truffles, olive oil, and home-cooked food. Guests can also be taken to Cattunar’s own olive groves which produce award-winning olive oil, or be taken on a truffle hunt when they are in season. Cooking classes or wine-pairing dinners with local chefs are sometimes available for group bookings at the residence and are a great way to taste Istrian cuisine. For the historical sightseer, the coastal cities and towns boast Venetian architecture (churches) and Roman antiquities (e.g. The Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč is rated as UNESCO world heritage site and is about 30km from the residence). Even a day trip to Slovenia’s salt flats (Sečovlje Salina Nature Park is about 22 km from the hotel) or to cross the border to Trieste is easy.
Sustainability
Wine Residence Cattunar is closely connected to the land and the community on which it is located and even though it is luxurious it tries to be environmentally friendly and socially responsible:
Environmentally Friendly Design: The residence was built on the site of the existing winery, and not on the land which has never been developed
This way, the Cattunar family avoided the environment impact by growing upwards (the guest rooms are located on the top floor of the building, which used to be the wine cellars. The architecture and landscaping were designed to combine with the natural terrain. Local stone and materials were used in construction as far as it was possible, and the villa was designed to make the most of natural light. To save energy (low-energy lighting, smart thermostats) insulation was installed to decrease energy consumption. The pool uses a new filtration system that uses less water and chemicals than the traditional system, and solar panels help heat the water for the hotel. Additionally, motion sensors turn off lights and cooling in public spaces when they are not needed and there is no one in the area.
Resource Conservation: The hotel operates within the green principles of a standard sustainable operation. The number of times the linens and towels are changed is on request and not every day, thus reducing water and detergent consumption. All the room amenities like shampoo, and shower gel are provided in refillable containers, to avoid the use of plastic containers. There is a recycling section for guests’ for glass, paper, and plastic waste. Being on the countryside they also recycle the kitchen’s organic waste and use it in the gardens. All the bathrooms in all the rooms are fitted with water saving devices such as low-flow faucets and dual flush toilets. These measures are done in the background, therefore, the guest can enjoy all the amenities while having a minimal environmental cost.
Local Sourcing & Community: Being a family owned and operated business located in Istria, Wine Residence Cattunar is proud of the fact that it contributes to the development of the local community and the local economy. The only wines they serve are their own wines and they serve their own olive oil for breakfast. Other food items (cheeses, fruits, pastries) are obtained from nearby farms and bakeries to ensure that the food is fresh and does not involve many miles in transportation. The majority of the staff are local people and the Cattunar family has brought employment to the rural area. Also, the hotel does not only recommend the local restaurants, wineries, and attractions to the guests but also directs the tourism earnings from the guests to the broader community. Some of the guests have appreciated this local culture; for instance, dining tips will lead you to family owned and operated konobas and agrotourisms where you will be served authentic food. The hotel also participates in local events from time to time (including the Brtonigla wine and food event) and collaborates with other small enterprises (e.g. offering guests a visit to a neighbor’s truffle hunting or an artist’s gallery in Grožnjan). These collaborations show a dedication to cultural sustainability, which means maintaining and respecting local cultures and traditions and making sure that visitors value them.
Clean Energy & Emissions: Although Cattunar Wine Residence is not an officially certified “green hotel,” it does attempt to cut down on its carbon footprint. The vineyards are maintained using integrated farming – while the winery is not completely organic, the winery does not use many chemicals and adopts integrated pest management to take care of the soil. The large areas of greenery around the property are also a carbon sink. The guest transportation is by bikes (emissionless) and the hotel can arrange group shuttles for excursions to prevent individual transport in cars. The facility is compatible for electric car drivers, showing the shift to sustainable transportation.
